Cosmetic Bonding

Bonding is one of the many cosmetic dental procedures offered at the Staines Centre of Dental Excellence. It is a highly effective and affordable way of treating minor imperfections like cracked, stained or chipped teeth.

Non-invasive and natural-looking, composite bonding is an easy way to get the smile that you have always wanted.

What is cosmetic bonding on teeth?

Bonding involves the application of a composite resin to the tooth. We recommend this procedure for a number of cosmetic issues including stains, cracks and discolouration. It can also be used to correct teeth that are crooked or have gaps.

Although veneers can treat some of the same cosmetic issues, bonding is a simpler, cheaper and less invasive procedure. Because veneers are custom-made for your teeth, the treatment is longer and more expensive. Whereas with bonding, the resin is simply applied directly to the tooth — a process that in many cases, can be carried out in a single appointment.

Our experienced team of cosmetic dentists can advise on which would be the best treatment for you.

The cosmetic tooth bonding process

  • Bonding involves creating a new surface layer for the tooth. This is a simple and painless procedure that, for most patients, does not require anaesthesia.
  • We begin by colour-matching the resin to the exact shade of your teeth. The next step is to prepare the tooth by roughening up the surface and applying a liquid solution.
  • We then apply the putty-like resin. Depending on your particular needs, that may involve filling in cracks or building up one side of the tooth to create greater symmetry or to close a gap.
  • To finish off, we smooth and polish the resin to create a natural-looking tooth. This is then hardened using a laser or ultraviolet light.
  • A single tooth will take less than an hour.
  • In certain cases where multiple teeth needed bonding, we anticipate 2-3 appointments for the bonding process. First a waxup is made which will demonstrate the proposed final aesthetic outcome and once both dentist and patient are happy the teeth will be bonded.
  • A few days after the dentist will review the teeth and finally polish them to make the transition between bonding and tooth is smooth.

Aftercare

For 48 hours following treatment, we recommend that you avoid drinks like tea, coffee and red wine as these can stain the resin.

We also recommend that you brush your teeth regularly and visit the dental hygienist for regular cleans, to prevent any discolouration from developing.
